CAPCA Ed will host a “SHB Road Show” seminar in both Temecula and Ventura. California avocado growers are encouraged to attend and learn more about managing this pest-disease complex from some of the most respected researchers in the industry. The following topics will be covered at the seminar:

A recent headline caught a lot of attention by announcing that “Shot Hole Borers Vanish from Avocado Trees.” For the record, this headline is misleading at best. Learn more.

Dr. Tim Spann, research program director for the California Avocado Commission, and Dan Pinkerton, California avocado grower, were recently appointed to the California Invasive Species Advisory Committee

The section 18 emergency exemption for Hero® issued April 11, 2016 has been amended per EPA’s request to change the ending of the bee hazard statement under the “Other Requirements” section. This statement now reads,

“This product is highly toxic to bees exposed to direct treatment or residues on blooming crops or weeds. Do not apply this product or allow it to drift to blooming crops while bees are foraging.”

The California Department of Pesticide Regulation issued a Section 18 Emergency Exemption for the use of Hero® EW Insecticide against the polyphagous shot hole borer (PSHB) on Monday April 11, 2016.

A recent article in the Los Angeles Times provided a compelling portrait of the damage the polyphagous shot hole borer has caused on the University of California-Irvine (UCI) campus and highlights research being undertaken by Dr. Akif Eskalen. Read more.

The California Avocado Commission was notified that two shot hole borer traps adjacent to avocado groves in the Temecula area had positive beetle finds the week of February 15th. Learn more.

On Thursday February 11, 2016, U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack issued a press release announcing the awarding of funds under the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Section 10007 of the 2014 Farm Bill. Learn more about the funding, as well as recent SHB finds.

The Commission anticipated submitting a Section 18 Emergency Exemption Application for the use of Tilt® fungicide against the shot hole borer, but efficacy data does not support the application. Learn more.
