On February 11, the California Avocado Commission began engaging with officials concerning reports that the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service suspended the import of avocados from Mexico. On February 14, the Commission followed up on the issue by submitting a letter to USDA Secretary Vilsack.

The California Avocado Society, California Avocado Commission and UC Cooperative Extension are hosting a free online Grower Webinar: Avocado Disease Management session on Wednesday, February 16 from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Since 2019, the California Avocado Commission has worked with Congressional members, the Agriculture Coalition for Immigration Reform and other agricultural leaders and organizations to voice support for the Farm Workforce Modernization Act. The UCCE’s ongoing avocado irrigation management research project aims to help develop tools and information that help growers effectively and efficiently manage their irrigation practices. As part of this effort, UCCE is conducting an Avocado Irrigation Management Survey to better understand California avocado growers’ irrigation management practices and concerns.

In December 2021, the California Avocado Commission surveyed industry handlers to develop the 2022 California Avocado Pre-Season Crop Estimate. The pre-season figures have now been released.

The USDA has extended the deadline to apply for the Organic and Transitional education and Certification Program to February 4, 2022. This program provides eligible applicants with pandemic assistance to cover expenses associated with organic certification and/or transitioning to organic production during the 2020, 2021 and 2002 fiscal years.

To provide the California Avocado Commission and the growers it serves with a better perspective on the health of the California avocado industry, CAC retained the Tootelian Company to conduct a member survey. Summary findings from the report are now available on the California avocado grower website.
