Due to the significant rain events in Ventura County, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is investigating the extent of damage incurred by agricultural operations in the county to determine whether a disaster has occurred. Once a disaster is declared, the USDA can then open applications to aid programs.

The USDA has opened applications for Stage 2 of the Supplemental Disaster Relief Program for producers who suffered crop, tree, bush or vine losses due to natural disasters that took place in 2023-24. Stage 2 provides support for losses not covered by Stage 1 of SDRP — including uninsured impacts and quality losses.

As reported earlier, the CAC General Election was cancelled — and all cast ballots will not be counted — due to ballots being returned as undeliverable by the U.S. Postal Service. On October 29 the Commission reissued new General Election ballots with different color coding to ensure only the second set of ballots are tallied.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Avocado Inspection Program has announced the avocado release dates for the 2025-26 season.
The GEM release dates have been divided into two distinct regions. The San Joaquin Valley region includes the following counties: Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Tulare. The Southern and Northern Regions for GEM comprise all other counties within California. Reed dates will be available in the future.

The California Avocado Commission will host a grower field day on Thursday, November 13 at the Pine Tree Ranch demonstration grove. Topics include Irrigation and Nutrient Management Reports, the avocado irrigation calculator and leaf sample tissue tests.

There are currently three vacancies on the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Avocado Inspection Committee. The role of the AIP is to provide guidance to the CDFA Secretary on all matters pertaining to the California avocado inspection program.
