Jesse Landesman, a Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research Fellow at UC-Santa Barbara, is developing a modeling framework to assess soil salinization risk in California avocado groves as part of her doctoral research. The end goal is to create a decision-making tool for California avocado growers that will assist them in mitigating the effects of soil salinization in existing orchards as well as identifying potential new orchard locations at lower risk for salinization.

While water discussions for 2026 were ongoing at the San Diego County Water Authority, the San Diego County Farm Bureau learned of a staff recommendation to eliminate the Permanent Special Agricultural Water Rate program and the Ag Discount over a two-year period. The SDCFB advocated against the elimination of these programs at the May 22 SDCWA meeting.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture will be issuing a second round of payments for eligible specialty crop producers who applied to the Marketing Assistance for Specialty Crops program by the January 20, 2025 deadline.
