At its November 16 Board meeting, the newly-elected California Avocado Commission Board of Directors named current CAC Vice President of Industry Affairs and Operations, Ken Melban, and Vice President of Marketing Terry Splane as co-executive leaders of the organization, effective immediately. During the same meeting the Board elected its new slate of officers.

The California Avocado Commission indicated it would work with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to remove Hass avocados as a host for the Queensland Fruit Fly quarantine and the USDA has informed CAC that Hass avocados have been removed as a host for the Queensland Fruit Fly quarantine that includes parts of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and the California Department of Food and Agriculture established an Oriental Fruit Fly quarantine in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, California. CAC staff immediately informed USDA of inconsistencies in the quarantine, which led USDA to remove Hass avocado from the host list.

The deadline to submit ballots for the CAC 2023 General Election is October 25. The election is for one producer member seat and one producer alternate member seat in each of CAC’s five districts. One handler member seat and one handler alternate member seat also are available.
